Stavros Douvis officiated the Greece Vs. Barcelona Basketball Match for Children in Need. Some of the most famous basketball players of all time, arrived last Saturday in Ioannina, to take part in a game different from the others. The game took place on Sunday, the 20th of February. The President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Karolos Papoulias was present. The Barcelona players underlined during their interviews, that they were grateful for the hospitality and the beautiful game! It is worth mentioning that the other official of the game was Mr. Andreas Loverdos, the Greek Minister of Health and Social solidarity. |

In November 20th, the FISU Executive Committee meeting held its last day of meetings in the Belgian capital.
TI Chair report for the 26th Summer Universiade was given by Mr. Stavros Douvis, EC member and CTI Chair SU. The Shenzhen Organizing Committee was next to give an update on the 2011 Universiade preparations. After Mr. Douvis’ update, the Shenzhen OC presented its progress report.

A little bit more than 10 months away from the Opening Ceremony of the 2011 Summer Universiade that will take place in Shenzhen (China), this second visit of the Technical Chairs under the lead of the CTI Chair Stavros Douvis is more than important. Competition and training venues checking, Competition schedule, sports presentation, media and broadcast, IT, Timing and Scoring, On Venue Results System are all important issues that have to be finalized during this visit. Because of the late recruitment of the Competition Managers within the OC, the work of our CT’s has been more than multiplied.

Today, June 10th, Michalis Kyritsis, CT Chair for Basketball/Men and Jean Paul Clemençon, CT Chair for Water Polo joined the FISU delegation in the host city of the 2013 Summer Universiade.
In today’s meeting, Starvos Douvis mentioned that the level of organization on the preparation for the Universiade in Kazan is very good. “This is the first Organizing Committee that started functioning long before the Universiade Opening Ceremony. In the morning session on Wednesday March 23rd, 2010, the FISU Inspection team, headed by Mr. Stavros Douvis, FISU CTI Chair, and accompanied by Marc Vandenplas, FISU Director for Summer Universiade.
In the afternoon, Mr. Douvis and Mr. Buchal visited more venues which are under construction. They looked at the venues in the Yantian District for volleyball and basketball and went to the Longgang District to inspect hte venues for sailing and open water swimming. The construction goes according the masterplan and the venues will be delivered to the OC by the end of the year. The sailing venue should be finished by the end of October because the OC wants to organize a test by that time.

Inspection visits and meetings are currently taking place in Shenzhen, China for the continuous preparation of the 2011 Summer Universiade by the CTI Chair and FISU Secretariat members.
After the technical inspection for tennis conducted at the end of last week, FISU Sports Manager Michal Buchel was joined last Sunday March 21 by Mr. Stavros Douvis, FISU CTI Chair; Mr. Marc Vandenplas, FISU Director for Summer Universiade; Mr. Dejan Susovic, the newly appointed FISU Media and Communications Director; Mr. Pascal Libert, FISU IT Manager and Mrs. Hedwige Hankart, Assistant to the Secretary-General/CEO.
Stavros Douvis, FISU CTI Chair and Michal Buchel, FISU Sports Manager had meetings with the sports and venues departments from the OC reviewing the detailed program and the technical handbooks and regulations, the program of sports events, the number of medals to be distributed by sports and events. |

The official press conference for the World Athletics Final IAAF / VTB Bank was held today, Friday 11th September at 12:30, at «Porto Palace» Hotel.
In the first part of the press conference of the IAAF and of the WAF 2009 Organising Committee, the panel consisted of the Senior Vice-President of the IAAF, mr. Sergey Bubka, the General Secretary of the IAAF, mr. Pierre Weiss, the Deputy Minister of Sports, mr. Yannis Ioannidis, the General Secretary of Sports and president of the WAF 2009 Organising Committee, mr. Stavros Douvis, and the president of the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) and president of the WAF 2009 Executive Committee, mr. Vasilios Sevastis.

Usain Bolt visited today, Friday 11th September, the 5th High School at Thessaloniki, just two days before competing in the World Athletics Final IAAF / VTB Bank. Hundreds young students showed their admiration and they welcomed him, in an impressive way. The Jamaican sprinter couldn’t believe in his eyes, seeing the affection of the public and signed many autographs to his young fans that surrounded him. The Deputy Minister of Sports, Mr. Yannis Ioannidis, the General Secretary of Sports and President of the WAF Organizing Committee, Mr. Stavros Douvis, and the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr. Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, accompanied Usain Bolt.
Secretary General and president of the organising committee of World Athletics Final Thessaloniki 2009 Stavros Douvis gave the start of a mock race between World Champion Usain Bolt and a 5 year old boy. The race took place in the high school's yard in the middle of hundreds of students who had a unique change to get close to their idol.

STAVROS DOUVIS APPOINTED CHAIRMAN CTI SUMMER UNIVERSIADE
In the Executive Committee meeting held in Brussels, the members for all FISU Commissions were appointed for the period 2007-2011. This was a very long and difficult procedure. Indeed, there were a lot of candidates willing to be part of the commissions. Stavros Douvis after his successful run in last summer's ellection in Bangkok was appointed Chairman of the International Technical Committee Summer Universiade.

The International Mediterranean Games Committee and the 23 National Olympic Committees-Members have trusted the ambitious Greek proposal for the upgrade of the Mediterranean Games and have assigned Volos to host and organise the Games of 2013.The battle was difficult under unfavourable conditions for the hosting of the 2013 Mediterranean Games. The campaign began months after the other two candidate cities, Rijeka and Mersin, in a negative sense because of the emotional load of the Mediterranean Family towards the Candidature of Rijeka, due to her repeated bidding for hosting the Games. Secretary General Stavros Douvis who is the Vice President of the bid Committee expressed his satisfaction for the successful outcome of the Greek delegation's collective effort.

The Secretary General Mr. Stavros Douvis got elected for second consecutive time in the executive committee of FISU.
A total of 145 national federations participated in the election and Stavros Douvis received the sriking 80% of the total votes.
Soon after his reelection the Secretary General said: "I want to thank the countries who voted for me and I promise to work even harder for the development and evolution of the University Sport movement. I also want to thank the Greek Government and more specifically the Minister of Foreign Affairs Miss Dora Mpakogianni, the Deputy Minister of Sport Mr. Georgios Orfanos and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Theodoros Kassimis for their valuable support towards the successful outcome of this election".
The Secretary General will remain in Bangkok in order to attend the opening of the 24th Universiade on August the 8th.

THE “FLAME OF HOPE” FOR THE 2007 SPECIAL OLYMPICS
WORLD SUMMER GAMES WAS LIT TODAY IN ATHENS, GREECE
The Secretary General of Sport Mr. Stavros Douvis, Vice
President of Special Olympics Greece, attended the ceremony honoring the
spirit of the Special Olympics and the courage of its athletes. The “Flame
of Hope” for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games was lit
today in Athens, Greece, officially launching the Global Law Enforcement
Torch Run. Carried by a team of Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement
officers through the streets of Athens, the torch now departs Greece to
begin its global journey to the site of the World Games in Shanghai, China.
The flame itself was lit using the rays of the sun at the sacred site
of Pnyx, located across from the Acropolis, in a ceremony hosted by Special
Olympics Greece.

2nd WORLD CONGRESS ON SPORT MANAGEMENT
The Secretary General of Sport Mr. Stavros Douvis, was
the coordinator and the rapporteur of a round table discussion, in which
distinguished participants from the field of professional football deposited
their opinions on the problems and the sustainable development of the
sport in Greece. The contribution of sport management and marketing and
the involvement of more specialists from these fields in the organization
of the sport were also discussed. The proceedings of the discussion included
some very interesting suggestions and proposals, which will help substantially
towards the upgrade and evolution of professional football.
